Assessment of the natural environment potential and directions of development as an element of spatial planning of a rural commune

key words: valorisation of the natural environment, rural areas, spatial planning

Summary:

The process of space development in rural areas is determined among others by urban planning and development of the transportation network and agricultural production, as a consequence leading to a change in the function and value of land. The assessment of the potential of the natural environment permits the determination of the scope of activities ensuring multifunctional and sustainable development of rural areas. The objective of the study was to determine the potential of the natural environment for the purposes of rural development, and particularly the co-existence of the tourist and agricultural functions. The study applied methods of valorisation of the natural environment and agricultural space known from the literature. A modification was introduced aimed at the optimal determination of the environmental potential of the study area. The research was conducted in area Brwilno, commune Stara Biała, district Płocki, province Mazowieckie. The valorisations were performed by means of point bonitation, ascribing points to each of five elements in the assessment of both tourist and agricultural potential. The methods applied so far were modified by emphasising factors the most accurately characterising a given area. Point weights of particular parameters were also changed. According to the performed study, area Brwilno shows tourist and agricultural potential. It is also attractive for the development of detached-house and residential function, which may result in spatial conflicts.
