Some changes of hydraulics conditions along a river engineered part of the Cedron Stream in the Beskid Sredni mountains

The paper presents the effects of applied river engineering works and its influence on the changes of chosen hydraulics parameters along a reach of the mountainous stream. It was done by presenting the regime of the stream before and after river engineering works. The key parameters used for the hydraulics analysis were: stream velocity, shear stresses, stream power and finally the unit stream power. The research area was located in Polish Carpathians in the Beskid Sredni Mountains. The research stream is called the Cedron and the research reach is located close to Radziszow municipality around 30 kilometers from Krakow. The research was carried out in 2003 (before the river engineering works, after the major flooding in the region) and in 2004 after finishing river training works, which were mostly targeted to stop the bottom of the river and its banks from erosion. To carry on the research 6 cross sections were chosen where detailed velocities of running water were measured in the velocity profiles. Later the rest of analyzed hydraulics parameters such as stream power and shear stresses were calculated. The results were presented in graphical manner (fig. 1-4) and analyzed. In final conclusions it was pointed out, that all ...

Evaluation of the Toczna river valley transformation in the Olszanka commune

The object of the research was the upper part of the Toczna river valley (31 + 650 km of the course, surface 865.4 ha), located in the rural Olszanka Commune of Mazovian Voivodeship. Analysis of the water management and land use before and after 30 years from the river regulation were conducted as part of examinations. Archive data, method of putting data from topographical maps and ortofotomap in the ArcGIS program were used in the study. A valorisation of area was conducted with field method (2009-2010). Researches included analysis: scope of river regulation, condition of the irrigation infrastructure, land use, natural resources status and values of the agricultural space in the valley. Maps illustrating the reach and a scope of changes in the valley were drawn up. The river channel change in the upper stretch brought about the land use structure change, the arable land surface and meadow habitats increase. Grasslands are located in the narrow lane offshore channels of the river. According to the typological division they belong to the wet mineral meadow sites, they are characterised by the lowest productivity and the nutritional value. The lowest regulation scope was in the centre stretch of the river. On the ...

Tendencies of developments in water plant communities in watercourses of diffe-rent bank protection

The following study presents an assessment of the influence of fascine and stone scarp`s reinforcement on the quantitative and qualitative composition of vascular water plants. The analysis was based on field results obtained between 2007 and 2008, and 2011-2012. The research was performed in four small and medium lowland watercourses located in Lower Silesia were 16 study sections were established. These sections varied in the material used for scarps` reinforcement. The field research included identification of vascular water plants occurrence in the river bed and determination of the degree of their bottom coverage. These factors served as the basis for Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index calculation. Jaccard`s species similarity index was used for the assessment of similarities among water plants communities in different study sections. Conducted research indicates that the choice of the scarp`s reinforcement has an impact on analyzed plant indexes and it does not undergo any changes re-lated to time. However, positive indexes change has been reported in water plants communities. ...

The influence of the watercourse modification on hydromacrophytes: case study of the Smortawa river

The aim of the following research was an assessment of the impact technical interference has over Smortawa riverbed`s hydromacrophytes communities. The measure of this impact based on the following four biological factors: the number of species, the degree of the bottom coverage, Shannon-Wiener index and Macrophyte River Index. Field study was performed in vegetation season of 2012 in three river sections presenting different degree of anthropogenic modification: natural, modified moderately in the result of ecoregulation and severly modified in the result of technical interference. In order to assess the impact of modification on the quality and quantity of hydromacrophytes communities Spearman`s ranks correlation analysis was performed. Performed analyses indicated that the biodiversity of biological indexes in study sections in linked with the range of works conducted in the riverbed. Stronger connection with these factors showed elements of the watercourse system modified in a result of technical interference such as: river filing, shape of the riverbed, width of the bottom and the way of scarp`s strengthening and shading the watercourse. ...
