The study determined the influence of microirrigation (microjet sprinkling and drip irrigation) and organic fertilization (compost prepared on the base of sewage sludge) on growing vigour and degree of mycorrhiza of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings as well as occurrence of soil mites (Acari) after treatment of edafon inoculation. Two-year (2004–2005) field experiments were carried out in forest nursery at Białe Błota, Forest Inspectorate of Bydgoszcz. Investigations were conducted on a brown podzolic soil formed from loose sandy soil. The first order factor was irrigation used in three treatments: without irrigation (control), drip irrigation, microjet sprinkling. The second order factor was fertilization, used in two variants: mineral fertilization (standard applied in forest nurseries), organic fertilization (compost). The plot area was 4 m2 and contained 4 rows (4m length) of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings. Total number of plots in each experiment was 24 (3 x 2 x 4). Organic fertilizer was produced on the base of sewage sludge (80%) and highmoor peat (20%). This fertilizer was spread in spring (dose: 100 t · ha-1) and mixed with the topsoil (10 cm deep) before establishing of exact field experiments. Introduction of edaphon consisted in the mixing of topsoil (2 ...

Aabout quantities of sludge from household wastewater treatment plants and directions of their disposal

The volume of sludge produced in household wastewater treatment plants depends on sewage treatment methods. Other volume of sludge is produced in household treatment plants and another - in collective wastewater treatment plants. In the latter case, the type of technological system related only to the removal of compounds of organic carbon or to the removal of additional compounds of nitrogen and phosphorous are also of concern. The identification of volume of sludge that is being produced is very important from the point of view of its use. In accordance with the current law, the sludge can be used in agriculture or for reclamation of terrains designed for agricultural or non-agricultural purposes. Regardless of the way these terrains will be used, it is indispensable to dewater them and in many cases - also to disinfect them. And there the questions of how to resolve the problem of sludge’s dewatering emerges. First of all, should it be solved within the household sewage treatment plant or within the municipal sewage treatment plant located in the neighbourhood? In the case of the former, one can take into account either the dewater and bags system or fully mechanical facilities. ...

The evaluation of usability of Em-Farming™ preparation for work optimization of pre-liminary settling tanks

This paper presents the usability of EM-Farming™ preparation for work optimization of preliminary settling tanks. The settling tanks studied are the first units of soil-vegetable wastewater treatment plants where domestic sewage is purified. The preliminary results of the study as well as field observations suggest that EM-Farming™ application activates and supports pollutant removal in the settling tanks. The preparation use results in sewage system declogging, the reduction in deposit volumes, nearly total decomposition of sludge blanket and fats in the preliminary settling tanks as well as odour elimination and decrease in odour nuisance of the tanks. The preparation tested increases significantly the effectiveness of organic matter removal measured by decreases in BOD5, COD and total suspended solids. ...

Preliminary results of studies on the effects of organic fertilization and mulching on the growth of one-year old european larch (Larix decidua mill.) seedlings and occurrence of soil mites under micro-sprinkler irrigation in two sylvan-natural regions of Poland

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of organic fertilization and mulching on the seedling vigour of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) and occurrence of soil mites (Acari) in forest- and post-arable soils. Two different nursery experiments were carried out in the vegetation period of the year 2005 on light soils at two sylvan-natural regions of Poland. The first trial was conducted at Białe Błota near Bydgoszcz – on a brown podzolic soil. The second experiment – at Lipnik near Stargard Szczeciński – on an acid brown soil. The higher was the rainfall amount during the vegetation period, the lower was the seasonal irrigation rate supplied to European larch seedlings. Because of this the seasonal irrigation water rate applied at Białe Błota was higher than that at Lipnik. European larch seedlings grown on the forest soil were characterized by the increased height and the fresh mass than those cultivated on the post-arable ground. Seedlings grown in the forest soil on treatments mulched with litter were characterized by the increased height and the fresh mass of above-ground parts as compared to those cultivated on control plots (without mulching). Mulching with litter increased the number of mites, especially oribatid ...

Biodegradacja of wastes from oil industry by composting process

The aim of the study was to investigate biodegradability of fat industry waste, characterized by very high contents of fatty substances (57%) and the re-sulting greasy consistency. The composting process was run under aerobic conditions using the compost heap method in three independent, simultaneously prepared compost heaps. A necessary pre-condition to ensure the effectiveness of the conducted process was to improve physical properties of the above mentioned waste by selecting an appropriate structure-forming material, providing aerobic conditions for the adequate functioning of microorganisms responsible for de-composition of fatty substances. In the conducted investigations it was essential to determine adequate moisture content of compost heaps at the beginning of the process (ranging from 60 to 75%) in order to provide appropriate water activity for the development of microorganisms and initiation of metabolite production by mesophilous bacteria, which when oxidized initiated generation of large amounts of heat, and thus a rapid increase in temperature in heaps already at the third day to 40oC, and next reaching the maximum temperature (60oC) at day 12, and the maintenance of the temperature range of 50–57oC for the next 15 days. De-termined optimal moisture contents and proportions of component materials for compost heaps contributed additionally to ...

The first factor was fertilization applied in the two variants: N1 – treated sewage sludge (⅔) + bark (⅓) and N2 – treated sewage sludge (⅔) + sawdust (⅓). The second factor was mulching with fresh cap-humus from the fresh coniferous forest, used in the two variants: S – mulching with litter and C – without mulch-ing (control). The single plot area was m2. Total number of plots in the experiment was 16 (2 investigated factors x 2 variants for a factor x 4 replications). Organic fertilizer was produced on the base of treated sewage sludge (⅔) and Scots pine bark (⅓) or sawdust (⅓). This fertilizer was applied ...

Changes in the content of ash, total organic carbon and carbon of humus compounds in sewage sludge composted with a straw addition

The condition for improving the properties of soil as well as the yield and quality of plants, as a result of fertilization with compost, is to use a stable and mature material. The degree of compost maturity can be evaluated, among others, basing on the content and properties of humus compounds. The aim of the research was to assess the changes in the content of ash, oxidizable total organic carbon as well as carbon of humus compounds in sewage sludge composted with a wheat straw addition. In addition, the aim of this work was to determine (basing on the obtained results) the degree of maturity of the produced compost. Mineralization of organic matter, which occurred during the composting process, resulted in lowering both the organic carbon content and the value of the C: N ratio, but increasing the ash content. Moreover, an increase in the content of carbon extracted from the compost with the mixture of 0,1 mol ∙ dm-3 Na4P2O7 + 0,1 mol ∙ dm-3 NaOH, and a decrease in the content of carbon extracted with distilled water were stated. The results of the carried out experiment indicated that the obtained compost was mature. ...

Research on cofermentation of sewage sludge with waste fats for the wastewater treatment plant in Brzeg

The article presents the analysis of operation of sewage sludge co-fermentation with waste fats coming from de-fattening process of industrial sewage generated in fat production facilities. Within the period of two years (2008-2009) analyses of the co-fermentation process efficiency have been carried out measured by the volume of generated biogas as well as the analysis of influence of the amount of waste fat used on the sewage sludge and waste fat mixture fermentation process. The average volume proportion between the fermented sludge and waste fat was 10:1. The maximum ratio was 4:1 (fat constituted 25% of batch). Depending on the amount of dosed fat the biogas fermentation was increased even by 80% in comparison to the case where only sewage sludge was fermented. During the examination period 107 m3 of biogas in average have been additionally achieved, for each 1 Mg of fat added into the fermentation chambers. Such volume of biogas allows for generation of additional 180kW of electric energy and approx. 2,8 KW of heat energy recovered from exhaust fumes. It was agreed that the increase of generated biogas volume depends not only on the ratio of dosed waste fat but also on its characteristics. It ...

Application of an innovative system for dehydration and disposal of sewage sluge from household sewage treatment plants

The paper presents the possibility of applying innovative systems for dewatering and disposal of sewage sludge from sewage treatment, developed in the patent application No. P-387607. The test object is made in full industrial scale in 2012, the private farm in the town of Jastków near Lublin. It was assumed that the main effect of the processes taking place in the test system will reduce the volume and hydrate deposits and their hygienisation. The dewatering system in the study consisted of filling 4 bags of raw sludge from the septic tank one time a week in the period from 24 September 2012 to 21 January 2013, the precipitate was dosed for 18 weeks, and his one-time dose of one bag of about 50 dm3. In total, each of the bags in the period landed about 900 dm3 sediment hydration of 99.5%. During operation of the plant bags weekly ProBio Em dosed at doses of 0, 5, 10 and 50 ml. In total, for the entire duration of the installation for each of the bags were added 0, 90, 180, and 900 ml of ProBio Em. A week after the completion of the dewatering of sewage sludge and applying the preparation ...

THE CONCEPT OF ALTERATION AND MANAGEMENT OF SEWAGE SLUDGE AT THE SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT IN SZAMOTUŁY

Under applicable law (The Act on Fertilizers and Fertilization 2007) sewage sludge produced in wastewater treatment plants is treated as waste. The article presents 5 variants of alteration and management of sewage sludge from the wastewater treatment plant in Szamotuły. Some of them include the use of green mass that can be obtained as a result of urban greenery maintenance works. For the purpose of this article there was carried out a quantitative balance of sludge, taking into account different degrees of its hydration. There were also discussed the results of an experiment conducted on the semi-technical scale. The drying process took place under a plastic tunnel with a length of 10 m. Two series of sludge drying at different outdoor temperatures were carried out. The sludge drying time in conditions of high ambient temperatures (24-36˚C) was 18 days. There was also determined the dependance between hydration and drying time at lower temperatures. In the final analysis, there were employed two basic methods of sludge treatment: solar drying and composting. The introduction of new solutions removes numerous existing sludge disposal costs. The benefits will consist in the elimination of sludge disposal costs or sludge hygienisation costs. ...

DETERMINATION OF QUANTITY OF BIOGAS FROM SEWAGE SLUDGE

Renewable energy sources have been amongst crucial elements of the European Union policy for a long time. Currently, they have become significant in terms of possibilities of the technology development, whichmay limit the effects and duration of the economic, energy and climatic crisis. The Directive 2009/28/EC obliges the increase of the share of Renewable Energy Sources in the final energy consumption up to 20% (inPoland up to 15%) by 2020. Sewage sludge is waste that significantly affects the aspects of environment. The research considered the rationality of using the waste for the production of biomethane. The purpose of the work was to determine the dynamics of biogas production from sewage sludge of municipal origin. Its scope included a review of the literature based on the Polish and European law. Issues of technology, production and use of biogas and residue were presented. The research was based on determining the properties of sewage sludge - raw and after stabilization, and carrying out a fermentation process for a period of 30 days. The validity of using sewage sludge as substrate for biogas production was confirmed. ...
