Effect of fertilization nitrogen-potassium and irrigation on crops some useful in phytoremediation

In environments with a high salinity are halophytes, which are exposed not only to the stress of salinity but also the stress associated with a deficiency of oxygen The gradual build-up of the problem in areas used for agriculture, affects the orientation of research, aiming at the selection of crops with high tolerance to saline soils, including irrigated. The aim, carried out in 2008-2009 experience, was the choice of plant species for phytoremediation of soils irrigated and fertilized for many years. The conducted experiments show that, of the growth and development of plants, to assess their suitability reclamation of saline soils, most of the nitrogen is indicated and greening index, to a lesser extent the height of the plants. There was an interaction between fertilization and the formation of species of fresh and dry weight of plants. This was mostly fresh and dry weight of aboveground and in the case of roots, only their fresh weight.Given the increase in salinity of the ground and most studied plants showed resistance to salinity white mustard, corn and least resistant species was yellow lupine. This is evidenced by lower salinity, the concentration of calcium, potassium and phosphorus in the soil subjected to many years of irrigation and ...

Influence of sprinkler irrigation and differentiated nitrogen fertilization on yields of early potato cv. ‘Dorota’ on the soil of weak rye complex in the region of Bydgoszcz

The experiment was conducted was in the years 2005-2007 on the very light soil in Kruszyn Krajeński near Bydgoszcz. The influence of sprinkler irrigation and the differentiated nitrogen fertilization on yields of early potato cv. ‘Dorota' was studied. This experiment was established as a two-factorial trial. The first-row factor was sprinkling irrigation applied in two variants: W0 - without irrigation (control), W1 - sprinkling irrigation. The second row factor - differentiated nitrogen fertilization, was used in the four following variants (doses): N0 = 0 kg N•ha-1, N1 = 40 kg N•ha-1, N2 = 80 kg N•ha-1, N3 = 120 kg N•ha-1. Potatoes were fertilized with the full dose of manure, the fertilization with P and K was uniform on all the plots, and it was applied in relation to the soil fertility. The mean yield harvested on control plots (without irrigation) amounted on average 14,41 t•ha-1. Smaller yields, in range 8,75-11,83 t•ha-1, were noted in the first two years of study which were characterized by lower rainfall (161-230 mm), higher yields (22,66 t•ha-1) - in year 2007 that was characterized by the highest rainfall (323 mm) in the vegetation period of the potatoes. The use of irrigation significantly increased ...

Effect of thermal and precipitation conditions on de-velopment and yield of oats cultivated in the middle-eastern Poland region

Results of the 3-year field experiment carried out in 2005-2007 at the Ex-perimental Station in Zawady near Siedlce on good rye complex soil are presented in the paper. The oat phonological stages progress depending on weather condi-tions in vegetation period was estimated. The weather conditions in years of investigation were diversified. Exceptionally unfavorable conditions were in season 2006 - the great precipitation deficiency was noted. In following years the effects of three sowing rates (300, 500, 700 germinating seeds/1m2) on three oat cultivars (Polar - hulless cultivar, Bachmat and Rajtar - hulled cultivars) was evaluated. It was indicated that the decisive influence on oats growth and yield had the weather conditions in experimental years, also with experience factors: seed spacing and cultivars. The highest yield was noted in favorable 2007 year. The sowing rates increase caused the substantial growth of grain yield. Among examined cultivars the highest yield had Bachmat cultivar. ...

Impact of sprinkling irrigation and nitrogen fertilization on yield and its quality in two malting barley cultivars

The aim of the research was an evaluation the impact of sprinkling irrigation, nitrogen fertilization as well as an interaction of the two factors on yield and malting quality of grain of two malting barley varieties‘Mauritia' and ‘Marthe'. A field experiment was conducted during the growing seasons in years 2010-2011 on sandy soil with dense subsoil in the Research Centre of University of Technology and Life Science - Mochełek nearby Bydgoszcz. This is an area in Poland of the highest average precipitation shortages and the needs of use the supplemental irrigation in terms of the climate criterion. On such type of soil, the irrigation had an interventionist role which is typical for the climatic conditions in Poland. It complemented periodic shortages of precipitation during the increased water needs of barley. Research hypothesis assumed that the use of irrigation in the technology of barley cultivation will increase and stabilize yields of grain and contribute to the acquisition of raw material that meets the criteria of brewing, regardless of the agricultural droughts occurring in a growing season. It was also assumed that, in terms of irrigation it would be possible to use higher doses of fertilizer than in conventional ...

Effect of irrigation and fertilization of nitrogen and potassium on photo-synthetic activity of cherry

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of microsprinkler and nitrogen-potassium fertilization on photosynthetic activity and quality of two varieties of cherry crop. The study was conducted in 2008-2009 (in the tenth year after planting), the varieties of cherry trees 'Łutówka' and 'Kelleris'. The experiment was a randomized block design in the system dependent (called split-plot) in seven iterations. Trees grown in the span of 4 x 2 mThe use of irrigation and nitrogen and potassium fertilization effect on physiological processes. Trees irrigated intensively assimilated carbon dioxide and water transpired. But had no effect on the concentration of CO2 in the stomatal apparatus. Irrigation has contributed to the reduction of nitrogen index and greening leaves on each tree crown height. The increase in fertilizer N and K increased the value of both indicators.Significantly more efficient photosynthetic apparatus of leaves found in the variety 'Kelleris'.Under the influence of irrigation increase in average fruit yield of the two varieties was 10.3%.Among the larger yielding varieties showed 'Kelleris', although the difference in yields was not large. The use of additional nitrogen-potassium in a dose of 160 kg ha-1 increased fruit yield, as compared to the control was 12.5%.No significant effect of experimental ...

Response of medium early, medium late and late potatoes to water factor on wheat and rye soil complexes

The data on the yield of potatoes grown on very good and good wheat soil complex as well as very good and good rye soil complexes in 11 experimental stations of varieties evaluation in 1996-2005 were used in this paper. For the wheat and rye soil complexes models of medium early as well as and medium-late and late potato crop were constructed as regression functions (quadratic polynomial with interactions), in which the amount of precipitation in May-June and July-August were independent variables. Models were studied in the range of 75-175 mm precipitation in May-June, and 90-220 mm precipitation in July-August, which corresponds to the average ± standard deviation of these parameters. In all cases, July-August precipitation was the factor more strongly affecting the yield. For medium early potatoes grown on wheat soils the optimum for obtaining the highest yields proved to be the set of factor: low May-June precipi-tation (88 mm) appeared with high July-August precipitation (217 mm). The yield achieved under these conditions amounted to 594 dt•ha-1. Medium late and late potatoes grown on the same soil reacted similarly to water from rain - the optimum set of factors was: May-June precipitation - 76 mm and July-August - 220 mm, ...

Water requirement forecast-internet platform for forecasting fruit crop water needs prepared in the frames of PROZA project

In 1997 the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM), University of Warsaw launched the Internet weather service which delivers numerical weather forecasts for individual consumers and has become a basis for several weather-related scientific projects. The project "Op-erational decision-making based on atmospheric conditions" (PROZA) (started in September 2009) utilizes data obtained from weather service provided by ICM. The Research Institute of Horticulture is one of the partners in the project. The institute participates in task 3 of the project: "Application of numerical weather forecasts in forestry and fruit farming". In the frame of this task, an Internet platform for forecasting of spring frosts and fruit crop water needs was developed. https://prognozy.projekt-proza.pl/. A user (after logging in) has access to the following information (forecast is prepared for 3 days): ETo, precipitation, climatic water balance and water requirements of major fruit crops. Data on amount of (easily) available water in root zone are also available. The information provided by the service make controlling of irrigation easier and thus improve agricultural water use efficiency. The estimation of forecasting quality showed that the accuracy of forecast was high proving its practical value for fruit growers. ...

The influence of drainage water from greenhouse soilless culture on pollution of shallow groundwater

Basic greenhouse vegetables in Poland are grown in open soilless system in which an excess of nutrient solution leaking from area of root system is discharged into the ground or drains of greenhouses. Drainage water from the growing slabs is more concentrated than nutrient solution supplied for plants. The aim of research conducted in the years 2010 - 2012 was to determine the effect of drainage water from soilless cultivation of tomato and cucumber on the mineral content in shallow groundwater occurring in objects of cultivation and in their neighborhood. Water samples for chemical analyzes were collected at intervals of three weeks from the piezometers located in greenhouses and adjacent areas within 25 and 300 m from the object. . The results of chemical analyzes of water indicate an increase in the degree of pollution of the waters of mineral nutrients. Ground water directly under soilless cultivated plants were contaminated almost all mineral nutrients that are in media fertilizers. Groundwater in significant quantities from entering nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Contamination of ground water in the cucumber crop was at a similar level as in tomato cultivation. Mineral content in the groundwater decreased with increasing distance from the objects ...

Comparison of response of three strawberry cultivars grown under greenhouse conditions to water deficiency

The response of three strawberry cultivars (‘Elsanta', ‘Elkat', ‘Grandaro-sa') to drought was examined by evaluating the yield and selected morphological and physiological parameters. Plants were subjected to two different water regimes: optimal irrigation (control), and reduced irrigation (water potential in the growing medium was maintained at a level -30 kPa, stress treatment). Genotypes differed in their response to water deficiency. Under water shortage conditions, the rate of CO2 assimilation and efficiency of photosynthetic apparatus (expressed by chlorophyll fluorescence parameters) were the highest in ‘Elsanta'. On the other hand, the severe inhibition of photosynthesis was observed in ‘Elkat', which corresponded to the reduced biomass production. Taking all data into consideration it was concluded that cultivar ‘Elsanta' appeared to be more drought resistant which was reflected by enhanced physiological and yield parameters. ...

Atmospheric precipitation deficiencies and excesses in the growing season of spring cereals in the region of Siedlce

The yield of the spring cereals depends mainly on the distribution of at-mospheric precipitation in the growing season according totheir requirements in particular growing stages. Both precipitation excess and deficiency are not de-sirable. The analysis of spring cereals' water requirements fulfillment was made on the basis of IMGW data concerning the sums of atmospheric precipitation in Siedlce in the years 1968-1997. Monthly sums of precipitation were compared with optimum values of precipitation, estimated by Klatt (Water needs..., 1989),for specific spring cerealsin particular vegetation months. The characteristics of water requirements fulfillment for particular cereals was made on the basis of differences between the values of monthly sums of precipitation during the years analyzed and the values considered as optimum. In the months of April, May and June the frequency of precipitation deficiencies was higher than the frequency of precipitation excesses for all the cereals analyzed. However, in July precipitation excesses have been registered more frequently than the deficiencies. During the analyzed thirty years, the highest values of the average precipitation deficiencies for all the spring cereals were registered in May, while the values of precipitation excesses - in July. Meteorological growing season during the analyzed years began on 30th March and ...

Impact of climate change on water demand of late potato

The paper presents the analysis of the impact of predicted climate change on water demand of late potato in 2021-2050 and 2071-2100. Meteorological data were simulated with the regional model RM5.1 with boundary conditions from the global model ARPEGE for the scenario SRES: A1B. Reference period was 1971-2000.The measure of crop water demand is potential evapotranspiration. It was calculated using the Penman-Monteith method and crop factors. The impact of climate change on potential evapotranspiration of late potato was evaluated in Poland at the five meteorological stations representative for agroclimatic regions: Olsztyn, Bydgoszcz, Warszawa, Wrocław, Kraków. Water demand of late potato will increase of up to 7% in 2021-2050 and of up to 18% in 2071-2100. Increase will be the biggest in the south-west and central-east regions and the smallest in south-east region. Predicted climate change and increased crop water demand should result in increase of irrigated area and irrigation water requirements. ...

Rainfall evaluation for crop production until 2050-2060 and selected climate change scenarios for north central Poland

The paper presents an attempt to evaluate rainfall in the context of expected climate changes for the purposeof irrigating. Total precipitation for a chosen meteorological station in Central Poland was simulated for current and expected conditions according by means of GISS Model E, HadCM3 and GFDL R15 scenarios (doubling the CO2 concentration is assumed as typical for Poland and it is expected for years 2050-2060). Four 500-year daily rainfall series were com-pared among themselves so as to analyse the crucial irrigating periods from May to September. For simulated data probability density function of total rainfall were estimated in examined periods, and next used for tail area approximation. The presented results show changes of average sums of rainfall (a 30 per cent drop) in the considered periods and scenario, as well as much greater vari-ance (a 20-per cent increase). In the context of irrigation it implies a greater risk of drought and shows the need for ensuring water requirements for plants in critical periods. The results stress the need for using the comprehensive model taking en bloc meteorological variables into account. ...
