The determination of heating and cooling day values using degree-day method: tomato plant example

Based on the amount and duration of external temperature, degree day values are determined according to whether the selected equilibrium temperature is lower or higher than the air temperature. Degree day values are calculated according to the fluctuations in ambient temperature. It can be understood whether heating or cooling systems are necessary within the calculated periods. In this study, the meteorological data of Antalya region dating back many years and the temperature values suggested according to the cultivation periods of tomato in greenhouse environment have been used as material. The daily average temperature values recorded for many years have been compared with the equilibrium temperature values selected for the tomato plant thereby calculating the heating and cooling day values for each cultivation period. Tomato cultivation in greenhouses is carried out in 2 periods in the region in spring and autumn. At the end of these two periods, it was determined that the heating degree days in autumn were determined to be higher than that in spring. Whereas cooling degree days were determined to be greater for autumn cultivation in comparison with that of spring cultivation. Information regarding the energy consumption of an agricultural structure can be obtained beforehand via the ...

Agricultural use of rural areas located in environmentally valuable terrain

The primary function of rural areas is their use in agricultural production. Currently, according to the balanced development of rural areas, one needs to tend to make those areas more attractive, create new jobs, create new sources of income for the rural population and to improve rural spatial planning. The agricultural production is extremely important in the areas of outstanding natural beauty. The management on protected areas can contribute to the protection of valuable qualities from excessive investment process. It must be conducted in accordance with legal requirements for environmental protection. The purpose of the research was to analyze the changes in agriculture in the context of rural area development. The communities within the Barycz Valley Landscape Park boundaries were selected for analysis. The study was based on the statistical data, including the data from the agricultural censuses of 1996, 2002, 2010, data concerning planning works and planning documents to lay down the development directions of the analyzed communities. ...

Determination of the potential fig (ficus carica l.) and chestnut (castanea sativa) production fields with the use of geographic information system in the kosk district of Aydin province

In order to enhance the contribution of fig to the national economy and to raise farmers' income level, it is necessary to encourage further cultivation of fig and direct farmers to fig production instead of alternative products. Most of the areas suitable for chestnut production are forestlands. There are orchards arranged with oak and chestnut trees with oak being predominant. Chestnut population in these areas should be increased. Cultivation area of this product that has many fields of use needs to be extended. Directing farmers to products that are storable in medium term with a broad market and high income is important both for the national economy and the farmers. The purpose of the present study is to remind producers the significance of two important products: fig and chestnut in the Kosk district of the Aydin province, Turkey, and to determine the areas suitable for growing these products within the study area. For this purpose the questioning and analysis features of GIS was employed. In this study, rainfall, temperature, soil texture, slope, elevation, wind direction, were taken into account to identify appropriate fields. As a result, approximately area of 13886 hectare of fig production and 3430.7 hectare of chestnut production ...

Temporary monitoring of areas prone to landslides illustrated with the example of the Kłodne village

Mass wasting processes are very dangerous phenomena, mainly due to their unpredictability. Moreover, their tumultuous and rapid character has led to attempts of predicting the places of occurrence of such phenomena and to assess the possible threat. Unfortunately, it is not possible to monitor all potentially unstable areas, however, temporary monitoring of such areas, that are already activated, is legally required. Monitoring the area prone to mass movements is essential to assure the safety of its inhabitants and their possessions. The article presents the example of a surveying solution which was applied to monitor the landslide areas as well as their surroundings. The subject of the research was the landslide that occurred within the area of the Carpatians flysch in the village of Kłodne. Its activation, disastrous in its effects, occurred in 2010 and was caused by an intense rainfall. The first described stage of the research was the design and stabilisation of a control network. This resulted in the stabilisation of 68 points creating an observational network. The next stage, described in the article, was conducting two observational series using both satellite and classic measurement techniques. In the following part of the article, the results of the field measurements were ...

Chemical composition of leachates on exploited landfill site

Results of analyses of underground waters on a municipal landfill site conducted in 2004-2008, prior to leachate cleaning were presented and discussed in the paper. The sewage quality analysis comprised pH, electrolytic conductivity, TOC, Cr+6, Pb, Cd, Cu, Hg, Zn and PAHs. Results of leachate water testing were compared with standard values and subjected to comparative analysis taking into consideration also atmospheric precipitation amount. The aim of the paper was to assess the leachate water quality in conditions of exploited municipal landfill. The analyzed waters were characterized by variability of composition evidenced by increasing pH values, electrolytic conductivity and heavy metal concentrations (Cr, Hg) total organic carbon (TOC) and PAHs, but also by a decline in heavy metal contents (Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn). ...

Evaluation of the plot size (farm land) of family agricultural holdings and the needs for land consolidation in Poland

The current study presents status and the need for improvement of the land distribution of family agricultural holdings in Poland. The assessment of the distribution of farm lands in the area between 1 and 300 ha has been made according to the 2013 data and provided by the Polish Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture (ARMA). Our analysis included totally app. 750,000 of family agricultural holdings. The evaluation of land consolidation was based on the two regional criteria proposed by the Regional Offices of Geodesy and Agricultural Areas, i.e. the plot size and the number of plots within individual family farms. The family agricultural holdings, that are included to the Polish system of agricultural support, have an average land area of around 16.0 ha, and this refers to around 6 cadastral plots with an average acreage of app. 3.0 ha. The need of land consolidation was estimated to be at the level of app. 7.1 million ha (this corresponds to 69.14% of total agricultural area land in Poland). The problem occurs in the entire country, but the worst situation is in the southern, south-eastern and central Poland. The implementation of the land consolidation and farmland exchange procedures within the Programme ...

Assessment of the use of Ewa bioreactor in the process of bio drying of undersize fraction manufactured from mixed municipal solid waste

The article presents the results of a research on the processing of undersize fraction, extracted from a stream of mixed municipal solid waste (MSW), into alternative fuel, in the process of bio-drying. The analysis was conducted with the use of an innovative EWA (Ecological Waste Apparatus) bioreactor adapted to carrying out aerobic treatment of waste in such processes as: composting, aerobic digestion/stabilization and bio-drying of waste. EWA bioreactors have been designed and manufactured by AGRO-EKO spol. s r.o. from the Czech Republic. The subject matter of the analysis was undersize fraction, with particle dimensions ranging from 0 to 50 mm, manufactured in the process of sorting (mechanical processing) of MSW. The main aim of the research was to assess suitability of the use of EWA bioreactor in the process of alternative fuel production from undersize fraction developed from municipal waste (in the process of accelerated bio-drying). Samples were collected between 2011 and 2012. The undersize fraction and the produced alternative fuel were analysed by AGRO-EKO spol. s r.o. and at the University of Agriculture in Krakow, in accordance with the standards for wastes and solid fuels. It has been concluded that undersize fraction produced from mixed municipal waste might be the ...
