USE OF COMPOSTED SLUDGE AND FOREST ECTOHUMUS TO ENRICH SOIL IN TWO- AND THREE-YEAR CULTIVATION OF COMMON BEECH SEEDLINGS

This study examined the effect of fertilisation with compost prepared from hygienised sludge with an addition of pine-tree bark and mulching with fresh forest ectohumus on selected growth parameters in two- and three-year seedlings of common beech and the occurrence of mites (Acari) in soil. The experiment was carried out in 2009-2010 in the Białe Błota forest nursery (Bydgoszcz Forest District) on proper rusty soil. The entire area of the experiment was irrigated with a stationary sprinkler. The beech seedlings on the plots where compost had been used as fertiliser were significantly taller than those growing on the plots where mineral fertilisers had been applied. Mulching increased the height of the seedlings significantly only in the last, third year of the study. The tallest three-year-old seedlings were found on the plots in which both of the tested procedures had been carried out. Neither of the factors under study had a significant effect on the diameter of the root neck in the second year of the nursery cultivation, but they increased it significantly in the third year. Fertilisation with compost with an addition of pine-tree bark increased the number of leaves per plant and the leaf area in two- and three-year-old ...

ELECTROOXIDATION OF DIESEL FUEL IN ALKALINE ELECTROLYTE

In recent decades the demand of energy has increased significantly. Providing more and more energy is an essential task of today's energetic industry. In the last few years, addition to traditional methods of energy production, alternative energy sources have been developing fast. One of these sources is fuel cell, mainly due to their high efficiency. Generally fuel cells are powered by hydrogen. However, problems with the storage of hydrogen are the reason for the search of new fuels for fuel cells. Moreover, fuel cells can provide an additional/emergency electricity source in energy systems using combustion engines. So, it is important using the main fuel for powering the fuel cell. One of the fuels used for powering the fuel cells could be diesel fuel. Diesel engines drive cars, trucks, boats, tanks and also agricultural machinery e.g. tractors or harvesters. So, there are a lot the possibilities of using this solution. The paper presents results of measurements of electrooxidation of diesel fuel emulsion prepared on the basis of a nonionic surfactant on a smooth platinum electrode in an aqueous solution of KOH. The resulting current density reached the level of 25 mA/cm2. So, the possibility of using diesel as the fuel for ...

WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE KRAKOW METROPOLITAN AREA OVER THE PERIOD 2003-2013

Water supply and sewerage infrastructure, which characterizes a particular territorial unit, is one of the key elements of its economic development. The sustainability index of water and sewage management system of the specific area, for which the total lengths of both water supply system and sewerage system are similar as it can be clearly seen, looking at the urban units of the Krakow Metropolitan Area, is absolutely vital. The apparent disparity between the lengths of both the water supply system and sewage system in the urban-rural and rural communes with a particularly significant shortage of sewerage infrastructure was shown. This proves the unsustainability of water and sewage management system in the area. A significant improvement in the condition of infrastructure in the analysed decade should be noted. This is clearly linked with the main objective of the Water Framework Directive and the subsequent participation of the analyzed area of KMA in the EU funds and other aid programs which aim at achieving a good level of water by 2015. ...

THE EFFECT OF THE INTENSIVE AEROBIC BIOSTABILIZATION PHASE ON SELECTED MICROBIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF WASTES

One of the most frequently applied methods of mixed municipal solid waste biological treatment in mechanical-biological treatment installations (MBT) is their disposal in aerobic biostabilization process. The process comprises an intensive phase and maturation phase. The intensive phase relies on waste heating in result of organic matter breakdown conducted by microorganisms settling the wastes. Microorganisms living in wastes have optimal conditions for development, i.e. a considerable space volume, optimal material fragmentation and organic matter availability. The aim of the aerobic biostabilization process is stabilizing and hygienization of wastes, so that they become a valuable raw material for other recovery processes (e.g. RDF production) or their disposal is safe for the environment and do not pose any epidemiological hazard for people employed in waste treatment plants.Analyses presented in the paper aimed to determine the number and species composition of vegetative and endospore bacteria, mold fungi, actinomycetes and pathogenic microorganisms, i.e. Staphylococcus spp., E. coli, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., E. faecalis, C. perfringens, settling municipal wastes prior to and after aerobic stabilization process. The aerobic stabilization process (intensive phase) was conducted in a laboratory BKB 100 bioreactor using the wastes, characterized by low share of biodegradable wastes (<40 %), obtained from MBT ...

USE OF COMPOSTED SLUDGE AND FOREST ECTOHUMUS TO ENRICH SOIL IN TWO- AND THREE-YEAR CULTIVATION OF SCOTS PINE IN A FOREST NURSERY

This study examined the effect of fertilisation with compost prepared from hygienised sludge with an addition of pine-tree bark and mulching with fresh forest ectohumus on selected growth parameters for two- and three-year-old Scots pine trees and on the incidence of mites (Acari) in the soil. The experiment was carried out in 2009-2010 in the Białe Błota forest nursery (Bydgoszcz Forest District) on proper rusty soil. The entire area of the experiment was irrigated with a stationary sprinkler.Organic fertilisation with compost prepared from hygienised sludge with an addition of pine-tree bark resulted in a significant increase in the plant height and the diameter of the root neck in two-year-old pine trees. The effect of mulching on these parameters was not significant. The synergistic effect of the factors on the plant height and the diameter of the root neck was not significant. Organic fertilisation significantly increased the height of 3-year-old pine trees, whereas it did not have a significant effect on the root neck diameter. Mulching increased the plant height significantly, but no statistical effect on the diameter of the root neck was demonstrated. Although no significant interaction of either experimental factors in their effect on the plant height and the ...

AN EFFECT OF REGULATORY WORKS RANGE ON ECOLOGICAL CHANGES IN WATERCOURSE BED

This paper attempts to assess an effect of the range of regulatory works in watercourse beds on the aquatic plant communities. The results of field studies carried out on sections transformed as a result of regulatory works and the non-altered sections were compared for this purpose. The field studies were conducted in growing seasons in years 2008-2014 on 11 small and medium-sized lowland watercourses in Lower Silesia. They included identification of aquatic plant species and estimation of the degree of bottom coverage with them. The assessment was based on analysis of changes in the values of five biological indicators such as: the number of aquatic plant species, Jaccard similarity coefficient, ecological status, Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index and Pielou`s evenness index. Comparative analyzes enabled to determine the qualitative and quantitative changes in the aquatic plant communities. However, they did not show any correlation between the analyzed biological indicators and the range of regulatory works in watercourse beds. ...

THE VASCULAR PLANTS IN THE “PUSZCZA NOTECKA” FOREST ROADSIDE

This paper presents the edge effect of a very low-volume road on the belt of roadside vegetation in the "Puszcza Notecka", Poland - one of the largest compact forest complexes in Europe. The observations were carried out in the vicinity of pine stands in the fresh coniferous forest and fresh mixed coniferous forest sites. Twelve rectangular experimental sites 30 and 50 meters wide at a distance of 0 to 10 meters from the edge surfaces were established. 75 species characteristic for the 13 phytosociological classes and 20 species associated devoided of the diagnostic value were recognized in the roadside area. Native species dominated, where the most numerous species belonged to meadow communities (Molinio-Arrhenatheretea) and ruderal (Artemisietea vulgaris). Despite the significant participation of synanthropic plants, there was no invasion of alien species. ...

TREND ANALYSIS OF CHANGES IN SOIL MOISTURE FROM THE DIFFERENT DEPTHS IN THE MARTEW FORESTRY

The paper presents trends in average annual soil moisture in the area covered by the sixty-year old pine stand. The area of analysis is located in the Tuczno Forest District, the Martew Forestry, in the north-western part of Poland. The calculations were based on the measurements of soil moisture at seven different depths below the ground level. A set of probes was installed for measuring the moisture using TDR method in order to calculate retention changes in the unsaturated zone. Humidity measurements used in this work were carried out at daily intervals throughout the year 2014. Designated trends were analysed using the non-parametric Mann- Kendall test, which is used for detecting trend of hydrological and meteorological parameters. Negative values of the Mann-Kendall statistics point to a declining trend for most - six out of the seven, analysed levels of measurement. The tendency toward dryness was not confirmed by the data set of precipitations. Although precipitations are considered to be the main driver of variations in soil moisture their impact severity seems to be controlled by other characteristics of the catchment area and components of the water balance, such as evapotranspiration. ...

DETERMINATION OF VEGETATIVE AND GENERATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF DIFFERENT COTTON VARIETIES UNDER DROUGHT STRESS

The research was carried out to determine the effect of different irrigation water requirements of different irrigation levels (mm), on the evapotranspiration seed yield (kg da-1) with vegetative and generative properties of two cotton types (drought tolerant, BA 525) and (drought susceptible, Lydia), in the Eastern Mediterranean region (Turkey). Drought or water deficit stress elicits many different phenological responses in plants. The study of vegetative features included the fresh and dry weight of plant (g), leaf area (cm2), number of leaves (number plant-1), number of fruit branches (number plant-1), number of bud formation (number plant-1) and number of node (number plant-1).This result indicates that water stress in plants limit the phenological development significantly and the average of all measurements made after flowering has been observed to decrease. ...

FLUE GAS CLEANING IN MUNICIPAL WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANTS – PART I

All plants based on combustion of the fuel generate a large number of flue gases, which contain variety of pollutants. These include particulates, heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Tl, As, Ni, Pb), carbon compounds (CO, hydrocarbons (VOCs), (PCDD / F, PCB), acid and other gases (HCl, HF, HBr, HI, SO2, NOx, NH3), whose emissions are controlled, and subjected to the European and regional limits. In municipal waste-to-energy plants large diversity of fuel results in a considerable concentration of the individual compounds which can be dangerous for the environment. Due to these facts, it is necessary to take into account a flue gas cleaning stage in every waste-to-energy plant. The article divided into two parts shows technologies and processes that can be used at this stage. It describes methods used to deal with all kinds of pollutants at flue gases treatment stage. The paper presents emission limits imposed by the European Union with examples of emissions at working municipal waste-to-energy plants, and the limits that are to be expected in the future. Some topics, as costs and residual handling, are only briefly mentioned and for more information a reader is advised to use literature which will allow him to learn more about ...

REASONS FOR THE GROWING POPULARITY OF ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS IN POLAND

Recently the so called "green", ecological or sustainable architecture is becoming more and more popular. Energy efficiency of buildings is one of the aspects of this kind of architecture. In our country, the main reason for the growing popularity of the energy efficient buildings is the new buildings' legislation. The new buildings' regulations set up much higher standards for energy performance of buildings than the previous ones. Poland, like all other EU member states, was forced to introduce new energy standards for buildings, by the implementation of the Directive 2010/31/EU. The prospective standards for all new buildings in Poland are on the level of today's low energy buildings. The purpose of introducing such high standards is to reduce the amount of energy used by the building industry in Europe.According to EEA report one of the results of climate change in our region would be longer and more severe heat periods, and some adaptation action should be taken. Probably, according to the new legislation, too little emphasis was put on the overheating risk of the buildings. At present, in Poland, other reasons for constructing energy efficient buildings are of minor meaning. Especially the financial encouragements for small investors are not effective enough. ...

THE EFFECT OF LOADING WORKS MECHANIZATION IN FARM TRANSPORT ON THEIR EFFICIENCY

Assessment of the coefficient of mechanization level of loading and unloading works was conducted in the paper. It was established that mechanization of loading activities affects the transport efficiency. The coefficient of mechanization index of loading works obtained for small load capacity aggregates (particularly tractor + cart aggregates) is unsatisfactory (e.g. for loose loads 3.71%). In all load groups and for all transport aggregates a higher mechanization index occurs at unloading works, (e.g. loose loads - loading 53.04, unloading 56.85%).The working time expenditure of transport aggregates is decreasing with increasing efficiency of loading and unloading, which is growing with increasing mechanization of these works. At mechanization index 0% loading works efficiency is 6.55 Mg, whereas at the index 100% - 29.19Mg. ...

bottom sediment, agriculture purpose, pot experiment, macronutrients, trace elements, maize

The aim of study was to assess the effect of bottom sediments on the concentration of macronutrients (K, P, Na, Mg, Ca) and trace elements (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu) in the plant test. The experimental design comprised 6 treatments: soil (control), soil + 5% of sediment, soil +10% of sediment, soil + 30% of sediment, soil + 50% of sediment and sediment (100%) in relation to the soil dry mass. The test plant - maize was harvested after 70 days of vegetation. Bottom sediment added to soil had a positive effect on maize biomass in the lowest dose, i.e. 5%. Higher doses of the sediment caused a reduction in maize yield. Bottom sediment positively affected concentration of nutrients: N, Mg, Na, K, Ca, Zn, Ni, Cu of maize shoots. However, the shoot biomass did not meet for fodder with respect to quality. Applied bottom sediment, has high content of sandy fractions, acid reaction and low concentration of organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, can not be used as a fertilizer. Using bottom sediment from Narożniki reservoir in plant cultivation, one should take into consideration a necessity of application of supplementary NPK fertilization due to low concentration of these ...

THE CONCEPT OF LAND USE DEVELOPMENT OF A MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE LANDFILL: THE CEGŁÓW COMMUNE CASE STUDY

The presence of municipal solid waste landfills is an inevitable spatial phenomenon that expresses the planning properties of the process of land use, economic development and the relationship to the environment. The process of land use is continuous, in which a period of planning, development and management of its operation is followed by a period of decline in the performance of (aging) and the fall of the land. Closing the landfill and reclamation results in the appearance of problem areas, i.e. of degraded areas both on the site and in the area of its influence. The paper presents the concept of development of a closed municipal solid waste landfill in the village Woźbin in the commune Cegłów and adjacent areas. According to the ‘Project of closure and reclamation of municipal solid waste landfill in the village Woźbin, in the commune Cegłów' after the operation of the landfill as well as the technical and biological reclamation, can be implemented forest restoration direction. The concept of developing the reclaimed municipal landfill and the adjacent land is assumed to introduce the planned forest reclamation and complement the recreational function which will increase the attractiveness of the area and will enable its use in ...

ASSESSMENT OF THE CONTENT OF HEAVY METALS IN PLANTS AND SOIL IN THE AREA OF THE TRZEBINIA MUNICIPALITY, POLAND. 1.CADMIUM

The study aimed at finding a relationship between the content of cadmium in the soil material and in the above ground parts of plants taken from the areas of the municipality of Trzebinia. Research areas were designated in areas degraded by mining and processing industries, which are now fallows. The total content of cadmium in soil and plant samples as well as soil factors such as organic matter content, granulometric composition, pH and electrolytic conductivity were marked in laboratory analyzes. The concentration of the element in the soils of the municipality exceeded the national regulations for agricultural land (Journal of Laws 2002). Similarly, the metal content in plants is higher than the acceptable standards for animal feed as stated in Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2012a). The results indicate a positive relationship between the content of cadmium in the soil at the level of 0-20 cm and its concentration in the above ground parts of plants of fallow lands of the Trzebinia municipality. ...

ASSESSMENT OF THE AGRICULTURAL ROAD NETWORK IN THE WOLA IDZIKOWSKA VILLAGE RESULTING FROM LAND CONSOLIDATION

Parameters of agricultural transport network are an important element that affects the operating costs of farms. The proper shape of the road network, suitable density and the quality (in particular the width of the roads and the type of their surface) should provide an opportune and efficient transport between home farm and some of the parcels. The article presents an evaluation of the agricultural road network in the village of Wola Idzikowska in the Fajsławice commune, which underwent land consolidation from 2004 to 2006. An inventory of the study area was conducted, and the following were determined: the distances between agricultural land and home farm, the road density index, the road extension index, and requiring different grades of the urgency of hardening roads' surface due to degradation of erosion were indicated. Eexisting agricultural transport network in quantitative terms has rated positively, whereas urgent and very urgent of hardening requires at least 4.45 km of ground roads. ...

ANALYSIS OF ILLEGAL LANDFILLS IN THE NORTH-WEST PART OF BARLINEK MUNICIPALITY

During the conducted study, 18 objects of illegal dumping of waste were inventoried. All inventoried objects are located in the north-west part of the Barlinek municipality. Each found illegal landfill was measured with measuring tape and its length, width and height of the deposited waste was recorded. For each location, percentage content of waste deposited, as well as its surface area and volume were calculated. All located waste landfills were divided into spot waste landfills, multi-point landfills, area landfills and linear landfills. Spot landfill is the dominant type of illegal waste landfills 12 objects, multi-point landfills were found in three locations and area landfills in two locations. Only one linear landfill was located. Waste disposal sites were located at different distance from residential areas. It has been determined, that the formation of illegal waste landfills is very often linked to the ease of availability of the local residents to the locations of waste disposal in the form of access roads or good location of the site. It has been determined, that despite the reforms of the waste management, abandonment of waste on undesignated sites is still observed - at six places the new wastes has been added after the 4 ...
