Chemical properties of reed and willow from ground beds of small wastewater treatment plants on rural areas

Due to their ability to uptake and accumulate trace elements, as well as to regenerate after cutting, some species of willow and reed have been used for many years in environmental protection to purify sewage and neutralize sludge. The paper presents the results of the investigation on selected chemical properties of the osier willow shrubs (Salix viminalis L.) and common reed (Phragmites australis Cav. Trin. Ex Steud.) cut every year. The research was conducted on ground-plant beds in two small sewage treatment plants in the Lubelskie voivodeship in 2002-2004. Both plants use a similar wastewater treatment technology. Their bed areas, the ways in sewage is supplied, hydraulic loading, and pollutant load are different, though. According to the results, willow stems show a greater ability to accumulate nitrogen and phosphorus than reed stems. However, the potassium content in both willow and reed is at a similar level. Plants do not uptake nutrients from sewage for a whole year but only in a vegetation season. Yearly removal of plants from the ground-plant beds advisable due to high concentration of assimilated nutrients in leaves and stems. In flora remains on the bed, nutrient release to an environment occurs and the concentration of liberated ...

The evaluation of usability of Em-Farming™ preparation for work optimization of pre-liminary settling tanks

This paper presents the usability of EM-Farming™ preparation for work optimization of preliminary settling tanks. The settling tanks studied are the first units of soil-vegetable wastewater treatment plants where domestic sewage is purified. The preliminary results of the study as well as field observations suggest that EM-Farming™ application activates and supports pollutant removal in the settling tanks. The preparation use results in sewage system declogging, the reduction in deposit volumes, nearly total decomposition of sludge blanket and fats in the preliminary settling tanks as well as odour elimination and decrease in odour nuisance of the tanks. The preparation tested increases significantly the effectiveness of organic matter removal measured by decreases in BOD5, COD and total suspended solids. ...

The influence of wastewater temperature on the efficiency of pollutants removal by biological ponds system

The paper presents the impact of the temperature of raw sewage on the effects of poluttants removal in biological treatment plant in Ludwin. The plant includes four ponds: (1) an anaerobic pond, (2A) an aerated pond with biological plunged bed, (2B) an aerated pond, (3) a sediment pond. In the years 2008-2010 organic poluttant removal effeciency, expressed as BOD5 and CODCr indices and total nitrogen and total phosphorus were analyzed. The entire system of wastewa-ter ponds is able to achieve a BOD5 reduction of aproximately 90% anad CODCr reduction 75%. Lower treatment effects for total phosphorus and total nitrogen were found (respectively 65% and 32%). Statistical analysis showed a clear influ-ence of the wastewater temperature on total nitrogen and total phosphorus re-moval. There was no significant correlation beetwen the wastewater temperature and the reduction of BOD5 and CODCr. ...

STUDIES ON THE EFFICIENCY OF SEWAGE TREATMENT IN CHOOSEN CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEMS

Ensuring water supply and sewage management are among the primary tasks of every commune, and they are also the condition for multi-functional de-velopment of rural areas. Positive changes in the area of providing communes with the basic water mains-sewerage infrastructure mean an improvement in the living conditions for the population and for the functioning of companies. For many years intensive work has been going on in Poland, aimed at ensuring a suitable status of the environment, especially in rural areas where still a lot needs to be done in this respect. At the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries numerous water supply and sewerage systems have been built in those areas, as well as many household and collective sewage treatment plants. One of the provinces where the largest number of household sewage treatment systems have been built is the Lublin Province. The technological most frequently applied here include systems based on the use of a septic tank and filtration drainage, systems with a biological bed or active sludge, as well as hybrid systems (biological bed + active sludge). Less popular, on the other hand, are constructed wetland systems, probably because their construction requires plots with ...

Development of water and wastewater infrastructure in Lublin province in 2000-2011

The paper presents analyzes the development of water and sewage infra-structure in the Lublin province in 2000-2010. In addition, based on the results of surveys carried out in 70 selected municipalities province, presents the state of the basic elements of water and sewage infrastructure in 2011. Found a large disparity between the development of water supply and sanitation in rural of Lublin province in the first decade of the twenty-first century. It was noted that in 2011 in selected municipalities of the region (mainly rural) water supply system has benefited 84.8% of the population, and the sewerage system only 18.6%. In the years 2000-2010 in the Lublin province has been gradual progress the construction of sewerage systems, and particularly in the case of collective and sewage treatment plants, which was possible mainly thanks to EU funds acquired by local governments. In the analyzed period, the collective biological waste water treatment plants were the most commonly used, in the case of household objects - infiltration drainage systems. ...

Application of an innovative system for dehydration and disposal of sewage sluge from household sewage treatment plants

The paper presents the possibility of applying innovative systems for dewatering and disposal of sewage sludge from sewage treatment, developed in the patent application No. P-387607. The test object is made in full industrial scale in 2012, the private farm in the town of Jastków near Lublin. It was assumed that the main effect of the processes taking place in the test system will reduce the volume and hydrate deposits and their hygienisation. The dewatering system in the study consisted of filling 4 bags of raw sludge from the septic tank one time a week in the period from 24 September 2012 to 21 January 2013, the precipitate was dosed for 18 weeks, and his one-time dose of one bag of about 50 dm3. In total, each of the bags in the period landed about 900 dm3 sediment hydration of 99.5%. During operation of the plant bags weekly ProBio Em dosed at doses of 0, 5, 10 and 50 ml. In total, for the entire duration of the installation for each of the bags were added 0, 90, 180, and 900 ml of ProBio Em. A week after the completion of the dewatering of sewage sludge and applying the preparation ...

The problems of construction and commissioning of constructed wetland wastewater treatment plant without plants on the example of object in Skorczyce

The paper presents issues concerning the construction and commissioning of a constructed wetland wastewater treatment plant on the example of an object, which was established in 2011 in the village Skorczyce (Lublin province). It was found that the costs of constructing this type of treatment plant pay for itself after about 5 years of operation. Calculated that the cost of materials accounted for 65% of the total investment costs incurred for the installation of the object. The remainder (about 35%) were the costs of services relating to the design and im-plementation of treatment plant and supervision of its construction and commis-sioning. In the first months of treatment plant operation was over 95% efficiency of the elimination of organic pollutants (BOD5 and COD) and total suspended solids removal. Optimum conditions for removal of pollutants were observed in the first bed with vertical flow. During start-up treatment plant the average total phosphorus removal efficiency was 84% and total nitrogen did not exceed 42%, which may be due to inadequate formation of biological membranes and unfavorable conditions for the normal processes of nitrification and denitrification.     ...

Impact assessment of anthropogenic pollution on water quality of Bochotniczanka river

This paper presents an assessment of the water quality of the Bochotniczanka river flowing through the area of community Naleczów and Spa Park resort in Nałęczów. It also identifies the root causes of pollution of the river and the measures to improve the status quo. It was found that the factors that have direct impact on water quality of the river are: study area pollution, especially surface runoff of eroded fields, as well as point pollution associated with disordered wastewater management in the catchment, which include, among others: farm cows, vacuum trucks base and horse riding. Physico-chemical indicators that indicate poor quality of the water in the tested river were: BOD5, ChZTCr, suspended solids and phosphates. Mean values of these ratios were generally outside the scope of the designated quality class in the Regulation of the Ministry of Environment [2011]. It was indicated that the abundance of coliforms and faecal coliforms, recorded in the waters of the Bochotniczanka river, in accordance with the Regulation of Ministry of Environment [2004], degrades it to V - the worst quality class and indicates their direct contamination by domestic waste. It was observed that the presence of a dam reservoir in the form ...
