Influence of pressure irrigation on the content of chosen heavy metals in horticultural crops

The results of the studies from 1991-2001 on the impact of drip irrigation and microjet irrigation on the content of chosen heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn) in edible parts of some vegetables (red beet, zucchini, winter squash, snap bean, carrot) and berry-bearing species (chokeberry, black currant, strawberry) are presented in the paper. Field experiments were carried out in Kruszyn Krajeński near Bydgoszcz on a soil of V-VI valuation class. The clay content was 7 % in the top soil and from 3 to 5 % in the sub-soil. The average organic matter content was 1,19 %. The water re-serve to 1 m depth of soil at field capacity was 88 mm and the available water 68 mm. The examined factor was irrigation. Three variants of irrigation have been examined: I - control (without irrigation), II - drip irrigation, III - micro-sprinkler irrigation at a soil moisture tension of up to - 0,03 MPa. It was found that irrigation significantly decreased the content of heavy metals in the fresh mass of strawberry fruits, but it influenced not significantly on this content in fruits of chokeberry and black currant. The content of examined elements in the fresh mass of zucchini and winter ...

The quantitative and qualitative characteristics of bottom deposits in water reservoir at Wilcza Wola

Determined were the volume of river sediment captured in a water reservoir at Wilcza Wola on the Łęg river. The water reservoir with 3.86 mln m3 capacity was put into operation in 1989. Silting measurements were performed after 10, 13 and 14 years of operation. Computed reservoir silting ratio were respectively: 13.08%, 15.79% and 16.20%. Samples of bottom deposits were collected to determine their physical and chemical properties. Determining of heavy metal concentrations may provide a basis for the sediment quality assessment and their potential applications in the environment after extracting from the reservoir bottom. Contents of harmful substances assessed in the sediments were compared with limit values permissible by the decrees of the Minister of Natural Environment Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry guidelines and criteria suggested in the foreign literature of the subject. The sediments from the water reservoir at Wilcza Wola are characterized by a low content of heavy metals. According to the Decree on soil quality standards [Joural of Laws, No.65, item 1359] none of the values established for the studied elements were exceeded. According to German guidelines threshold values of heavy metal concentrations in bottom deposits are between twice and thrice higher than those obtained in ...

Inspection of sources and evaluation of the level of pollution with heavy metals of bottom sediments of the Prądnik-Białucha river in Cracow, for the assessment of its ecological potential

As natural river-courses, according to the Act on Water Law (Dz.U. 2005.239.2019 (U)), are recognized: rivers, streams, brooks or other waters, flowing continually or periodically, in their natural river-beds. Urbanized water–courses, in turn, constitute streams and brooks, of draining character, within city areas (Osmulska- Mróz, 1990). Their average daily rate of flow is not higher than 1,5 m3/s, and maximum ratio of breadth to depth equals 20:1. The urbanized water courses, often with developed small retention, as a consequence of urbanization, either disappear or become sewers (open or partly covered), transporting pollutions to the greater rivers 169 or water regions. Within their catchments, particularly, takes place the accumulation of heavy metals in bottom sediments. The latter process combined with eutrophisation and increased salinity, causes degradation of ecological potential and extinction of sensitive species of water plants. The Prądnik–Białucha River is an example of such water-courses. In order to assess the quality of water, its pH, EC, Eh and heavy metal contents in water, water suspension matter and bottom sediments, have been determined. The concentration of anions: chloride, sulfate, nitrate and phosphate have also been analyzed. The results obtained were referred to the standards obligatory in Poland and in EU. The ...

The influence of anthropopression on plants cover and deposition of trace elements within the region of bottom sediments of hydraulic structures – the examples from polish carpathians streams

The aim of the following paper was to present the level of the chosen trace elements such as: Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn which were deposited within the bottom sediments in the region of hydraulic structures. Special attention was put to sediments trapped in the pools of check-dams and small channel bars found along the channelized parts of the mountain streams. The research was conducted on three Polish Carpathian streams: the lłynne stream, the Kudowski, and the Lubanski stream – all in the Gorce Mountains. All of the investigated streams are partly channalized and partly are in natural conditions. The contamination was stated in sediments of the Mlynne Stream in case of Ni, Cu and Cr. The sample were collected upstream the barrage (Ni and Cu) and ad the barrage Cr. The plant covers were determinated mainly by hydraulic structures. In case of vegetation the biggest anthropopression was stated in upstream of barrage sections located on the Mlynne and Kudowski Streams. ...

Heavy metals in ecological system of Mściwojów reservoir

In the ecological system of the Mściwojów Reservoir the occurrence of heavy metals was ascertained. The concentration of chosen elements: in bottom sediments of the reservoir (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Mn, Fe) and in the reed (Phragmites australis) from settlement ponds and the pre-dam reservoir (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) has been determined. Origin of these metals can be both geogenic and anthropogenic. In the paper the possibility of the element genesis has been presented. Accordingly, there has been analyzed the geological formation of the reservoir catchment and collected the information on agricultural and communal pollutions.. Anthropogenic hazard for the water environment on this area originates mostly from the agricultural space, as a consequence of applying the intensive agriculture, the mineral manures and the plant protection measures and the irrational leadership water-of sewer management. ...

Heavy metal content in leachates from the landfill site in Wola Suchożebrska

Leachates in the landfill site both result from direct flow of water from atmospheric precipitations and arise during the process of biochemical changes, most frequently organic compounds. The aim of the research was presentation of several selected heavy metals content in the leachate from landfill site posing a hazard to the environment. The landfill site is situated in Wola Suchożebrska, in the eastern part of the Mazowieckie voivodeship in the Podlaski county. It receives waste from the city of Siedlce and several neighbouring communes. Leachates were collected in compliance with the PN-ISO 5667-10:1997 standard taking in to consideration the vertical stratification of the leachate quality. The research covered concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr and Hg. No elevated concentrations of any of the analyzed indices was assessed over the 2007-2012 period in industrial waste supplied to the sewer system. Obtained results confirmed that during the recent years of the landfill exploitation it has been receiving only wastes whose storage does not pose a potential source of environmental pollution with heavy metals, on condition that proper accumulation and treatment of leachates is maintained. ...

Impact of railway trasport on soil and Pleurozium Schrebericontamination with heavy metals

The purpose of the studies was to assess environmental contamination alongside railway lines in the suburbs of Warsaw by determining the concentrations of selected heavy metals in surface layer of soil as well as moss (Pleurozium schreberi). The studies were conducted in the southern part of Warsaw (central Poland) in three sampling points: before the railway station, and after the station to the northbound. Soil and moss samples were taken from each of these sites at distances of 1, 10, 20 and 30 m from the railroad. Heavy metals were analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The highest Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb contents in soil were found 1 m from the railroad at each of the analyzed sites. pH was lowest at 30 m (sampling points A and B), and highest at 1 m whilst EC value was highest in sampling point A (near railway station). Maximum contents of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Ni) in Pleurozium schreberi moss were most often present in the direct proximity of the railroad tracks. ...

Concentration of chosen trace elements in bottom deposits of watercourse

The research was carried out on the section of the watercourse located in the village Mostowo. Watercourse flows through the pipe at a certain distance. The study was carried out on the uncanalized part with length of 1022 m. At this section the three measuring points were established. Bottom sediments were analyzed for the contents of selected heavy metals, such as: Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn. Using the maximum concentrations of heavy metals in the analyzed sediment samples the evaluation of watercourse sediment contamination was done. The aim of the study was the assessment of sediments contamination and indication on possibilities of their utilization. The obtained results indicate that the highest concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments were in samples taken from a point located near the business buildings, allotments and near the seed headquarters (P-1) in a layers 5-10 and 20-30 cm. The results indicate that the studied sediments differently accumulated the heavy metals depending on the location of sampling points. That accumulation can be expressed by different series of heavy metals concentration in the sediment. For the point P 1 it takes the following form: Zn> Pb> Cu> Cr> Ni> Co> Cd, for the point ...

ASSESSMENT OF THE CONTENT OF HEAVY METALS IN PLANTS AND SOIL IN THE AREA OF THE TRZEBINIA MUNICIPALITY, POLAND. 1.CADMIUM

The study aimed at finding a relationship between the content of cadmium in the soil material and in the above ground parts of plants taken from the areas of the municipality of Trzebinia. Research areas were designated in areas degraded by mining and processing industries, which are now fallows. The total content of cadmium in soil and plant samples as well as soil factors such as organic matter content, granulometric composition, pH and electrolytic conductivity were marked in laboratory analyzes. The concentration of the element in the soils of the municipality exceeded the national regulations for agricultural land (Journal of Laws 2002). Similarly, the metal content in plants is higher than the acceptable standards for animal feed as stated in Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2012a). The results indicate a positive relationship between the content of cadmium in the soil at the level of 0-20 cm and its concentration in the above ground parts of plants of fallow lands of the Trzebinia municipality. ...

SPECIES COMPOSITION OF VEGETATION COVER IN THE FALLOW LANDS IN THE AREA OF THE TRZEBINIA MUNICIPALITY

Among the species found in the study areas the species typical of fresh meadows such as false oat-grass, goosegrass and sorrel as well as thermophilic species such as crownvetch, greater knapweed or cypress spurge appear with great frequency. ...

heavy metals, zinc, soil, plant, fallow soil, pollution

The paper verified the hypothesis of the existence of the correlation between the content of zinc in soils and plants in the municipality of Trzebinia that is in the area which is highly degraded as a result of long term activity of mining and processing of local raw materials. In order to achieve the above, the total metal content in plant and soil material as well as the selected physicochemical properties of soil such as pH, electrolytic conductivity, organic matter content and granulometric composition were determined. 664 soil material samples and 332 plant material samples were collected in years 2010-2012 from 83 research plots located in fallow lands of the town of Trzebinia and in 10 village councils of the municipality. The results obtained of zinc content do not confirm the correlation between soil and plant. The disclosed concentration of the element is in line with indications of permitted levels of metal content in plants proposed by IUNG, which allows the use of plant material as animal feed. The mean content of zinc in the soils of the municipality is higher than the permitted level of national regulations. The claim that the soil of the municipality is contaminated with ...

ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTION IN BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF SMALL WATER RESERVOIRS WITH DIFFERENT CATCHEMENT MANAGEMENT

The main purpose of this work was to determine the degree of negative impact of heavy metals accumulated in the water sediments to aquatic organisms. Samples of sediments were collected in winter 2013, from 4 layers of sediment (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm) at three points along the water reservoir. Sediments were prepared for analysis in accordance with the procedures applied in soil science. The analysis was carried out for the fraction with a particle diameter less than 1 mm. The total content of such elements as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (using the Thermo Scientific iCE 3000 series spectrometer) after digestion in a mixture (5:1) of concentrated acid HNO3 (65 %) and HClO4 (60%). The total Hg content was obtained by using the AMA 254 analyzer. Only the lead content in the analyzed samples of bottom sediments exceeded the contamination value given by polish law (the Regulation of the Minister of Environment). According to the classification of PGI samples of sediments are classified mainly as medium polluted sediments (Class II), with the exception of zinc and lead concentrations (Class III). Due to the value of the indicator ...

ACCUMULATION OF SELECTED HEAVY METALS IN WILLOW SHOOTS (Salix viminalis L.) CULTIVATED IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF A COAL ASH AND SLAG LANDFILL

The aim of the study was to evaluate the contents of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu in shoots of willow (Salix viminalis L.) cultivated in the vicinity of a coal ash and slag landfill. The landfill is surrounded by arable lands and meadows. There are two major negative influences of the landfill - dusting and flooding. The result of these interactions is the systematic reduction of agricultural value of the land. A field with an area of 9600 m2 were chosen. The land is located east to the landfill. A total of 40 samples of biomass was collected. The contents of analysed elements were determined by FAAS using a Unicam Solaar M6 spectrometer. Distance from the landfill affects the contents of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu in the tested willow shoots. However, there is no single concentration pattern for all the investigated metals. An increase in willow cultivation on the described area can bring a good environmental effect and become an example of proper management of the ash and slag landfill neighbourhood. ...
